Using RPG Maker assets: the short licensing guide

The question that launches a thousand threads: "can I use these assets?" The short version, as a starting point:
  • RTP and bundled assets: the assets that ship with an RPG Maker engine are generally licensed for use in games made with RPG Maker. Using them in a different engine is usually not covered. When in doubt, the EULA for your specific engine version is the actual authority, not forum folklore (including this post).
  • Purchased DLC packs: read the pack's terms. Many allow use in any engine, some are RPG Maker only. It varies by pack, not by vibes.
  • Community edits of official assets: an edit of an official asset generally inherits the original's restrictions. A recolored RTP sprite is still RTP.
  • Community-made originals: whatever license the creator states. No license stated? Ask. Do not assume.

When you post assets in this section, state your terms clearly: commercial use yes or no, credit required or not, edits allowed or not, RPG Maker only or engine-free.

Licensing questions welcome in this section any time. Nobody here will make you feel dumb for asking before you ship, that is the correct order of operations.
